Most applications are made with the target demographic in mind. Even if things seem a little far-fetched at time, all it takes is a quick tutorial from a friend or family member to learn how to use them. In this week’s blog, we discuss just some of the top essential apps for the 55 and overs.

Spotify

If you love music, radio and podcasts, you’ll love Spotify! This clever app lets you listen to any song or artist you want, whenever you want, from the comfort of your own home and even on the go! There are two versions: the free version, but this includes a lot of adverts played between each song, or you can get a premium version. This is where you pay a monthly fee, but it’s advert free, so you can listen to your favourite music or podcasts without any interruptions! Spotify is compatible with phones, tablets and laptops for total accessibility and convenience; we simply couldn’t live without it!

Words with friends

Think yourself a bit of a wordsmith? Words with Friends is extremely popular with people of all ages! This is a word game similar to Scrabble, which allows you to play with (or against!) friends, family and even the ‘computer’. No pressure, just a relaxed and fun game that you can pick up where you left off at any time! It’s a great way of keeping your mind active, learning new vocabulary, whilst staying social with family and friends!

Elevate - brain training

There are many ways to keep those cogs ticking over and utilising Elevate brain training is one of them! This clever application has been specifically designed to improve a range of cognitive skills, including memory retention, attention span and processing speed, all of which are highly beneficial for 60 and over. Elevate brain training provides a rotation of different ‘sessions’ and games which are personalised to the user. If you’re looking for a fun and educational way to keep your brain sharp, this app is an essential! Enjoy this on the go or at home with a cuppa.

Google Maps

Google Maps is brilliant for the 60 and over because you can see how far you are from anywhere in the world! If you’re looking to get somewhere specific, you’ll be able to see the routes and transport methods most appropriate for you to get there. It’s just like a Sat Nav, with real time updates – it also talks to you, aswell as having a visual!

If you’ve ever fancied looking back at your old school, or a house where you grew up, Google maps will show you exactly what it looks like now through its satellite, terrain or street views too! It really is clever technology.

Additionally, Google Maps can easily help you identify your current location and even pin point where you parked! The blue dot in-app marks your current location, so all you have to do is set this as your ‘Parking Location’ from the menu at the top and it’ll be saved for as long as you need it for! When you are ready to head back to your car, click the blue ‘Directions’ icon and choose ‘Saved Parking’.

Our new home has enhanced our lifestyle enormously. When we first walked into our new home...we felt a great sense of relief - we felt that were embarking on a new life together. We are looking forward to a community atmosphere building here and to be able to head out to the onsite shops, as well as the gym and other facilities.
