The overall benefits
Lowering stress: Getting lost in a book has been proven to lower stress and anxiety levels, helping to improve overall quality of life. Frequent readers are also better equipped to process general information.
Improving cognitive function: Reading offers significant mental stimulation and improves concentration and our ability to retain information. Reading exercises your memory. This is critical to the short-term recall of everyday events. Regular mental workouts through reading can strengthen the brain’s neural network. This helps your mind become more receptive to learning and with memory retention. Studies have shown that adults who spend time reading show a slower cognitive decline as they age, plus it’s a great way for those aged 55 and over to learn new information and keep the brain ticking over!
Personal time: Taking time out with a good book ensures you have regular quality personal time. Reading gives you the chance to sit down and enjoy some peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the day to day. It’s important to take time for yourself and indulge in what brings you joy from time to time.
Encourages time away from a screen: Many films are based on novels, which often tend to be better than the films anyway! After all, there is only so much that you can cram into 2 hours of screen time. A book enables you to delve deeper into the journey and connect with the characters more! If you’re a film fanatic, you may be surprised at how much a book can change your perspective on life.
Social interaction: Reading offers an abundance of social opportunities! Joining a book club locally, or even online is a great way to meet new friends and connect with like minded people! Book clubs are a lot of fun because they encourage you to read more and you can share your thoughts and discuss a good book with other 55 and overs.
