Over 55 retirement villages: Supporting World Alzheimer’s Day
With approximately 55 million people living with Alzheimer’s and countless others indirectly affected, it’s something that we’ll all most likely brush shoulders within our lifetime. With World Alzheimer’s day on 21st September, this week, over 55 retirement villages such as Burnham Waters, takes a closer look at the importance of World Alzheimer’s Day and how to support the cause.
What is it Alzheimer’s Disease?
Alzheimer's Disease is a type of Dementia that affects the brain, notably the memory, thinking and overall behaviour. Early symptoms often include changes in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. Symptoms can eventually grow severe enough to interfere with simple and routine tasks. Alzheimer’s is the most common branch of dementia and accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases.
Although not a normal part of the aging process, Alzheimer’s tends to affect those that are 65 and older. Where someone younger than this is displaying symptoms, it can be considered early-onset Alzheimer’s.
Is Alzheimer’s The Same as Dementia?
Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia are different, although they are often medically grouped together. Dementia is actually the general term for a collective of similar brain, memory loss and cognitive diseases (including Alzheimer’s). Alzheimer’s is a type of Dementia but is a specific disease that first affects the part of the brain associated with learning. Unfortunately, its severity gradually gets worse over time.
The Importance of World Alzheimer’s Day
Each year on 21st September, World Alzheimer’s Day helps to raise international awareness, educate, encourage support and challenge the common stigma that surrounds Alzheimer related dementia.
Since its inception, the impact of World Alzheimer’s Day is increasing. However, the lack of information surrounding dementia as a whole remains to be a global problem that calls for huge collaborative action. Most people often think that this Alzheimer’s is a normal part of ageing, however, it is not.
This being said, the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease is increasing age. This is evident as the majority of Alzheimer’s patients are typically 65 years or older. However, this doesn’t completely classify the disease as an elderly illness because it is estimated that two million people under 65 are suffering from disease globally.
Supporting World Alzheimer’s Day
To tackle the international dementia challenge, it’s important that communities work together to help make a difference and raise awareness. Do you want to make an impact this year?
