Staying active this Active April: the key to a happier, healthier retirement at Burnham Waters
As spring arrives and the days grow longer, April offers the perfect opportunity to refresh routines and embrace a more active lifestyle and a healthier retirement . This year, “Active April” is inspiring people of all ages to move more, feel better, and prioritise their wellbeing - and there’s no better place to do that than in the beautiful surroundings of Burnham-on-Crouch.
For those enjoying retirement at Burnham Waters, staying fit and active isn’t just about exercise - it’s about maintaining independence, building confidence, and enjoying a vibrant, fulfilling lifestyle.
What is Active April?
Active April is a nationwide initiative encouraging people to incorporate more physical activity into their daily lives. Whether it’s a gentle walk, a structured fitness class, or simply stretching at home, the goal is to build sustainable habits that improve both physical and mental health.
For retirees, this message is especially important. Regular movement supports mobility, balance, and strength - all essential for maintaining independence later in life. It also boosts mood, reduces stress, and helps foster social connections.
At Burnham Waters, Active April is more than just a campaign - it’s a way of life.
Why staying active matters in retirement
Retirement is often seen as a time to slow down, but in reality, it’s an opportunity to focus on wellbeing like never before. Staying active doesn’t mean running marathons or lifting heavy weights - it’s about consistent, mindful movement that supports the body.
Some of the key benefits include:
- Maintaining independence – Everyday tasks like gardening, dressing, or even tying shoelaces become easier with improved strength and flexibility.
- Better posture and mobility – Reducing stiffness and discomfort helps residents stay comfortable and confident.
- Improved mental wellbeing – Exercise releases endorphins, helping to reduce anxiety and improve mood.
- Social connection – Group activities create a sense of belonging and community.
At Burnham Waters, these benefits are brought to life through thoughtfully designed activities that cater to all abilities.
Meet Nikki: Bringing mindful movement to Burnham Waters
At Burnham Waters residents can participate in a weekly Pilates class, led by experienced instructor Nikki.
With 25 years in the fitness industry, Nikki has always been passionate about bodyweight exercises - using your own body to build strength in a natural and sustainable way. Around three years ago, she discovered Pilates, which marked the beginning of her journey into mindful movement.
For Nikki, Pilates is about more than just exercise. It’s about connecting movement with breath, improving posture, and building strength in a way that supports the body for the long term.
Just over a year ago, she launched her own business, focusing on a holistic approach to wellness and lifestyle. Today, she runs classes across the local area, including Burnham, Maldon, and Battlesbridge, with her sessions at Burnham Waters becoming a firm favourite among residents.
What is pilates?
Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on controlled, mindful movements. Nikki explains that every session begins with pelvic alignment - helping participants find a neutral spine position. From there, attention turns to breathing.
“Many people tend to shallow breathe, which can create tension in the shoulders,” Nikki explains. “Learning to use lateral breathing helps release that tension and improves overall movement.”
Each class ends with a stretching section, providing a full-body stretch while continuing to build strength and flexibility. While some movements can be challenging, Nikki emphasises that everything can be broken down into manageable steps.
Over time, residents notice real progress - moving more freely, feeling stronger, and gaining confidence in their abilities.
Pilates at Burnham Waters: something for everyone
One of the strengths of Nikki’s classes at Burnham Waters is their inclusivity. Residents can choose between chair-based and mat-based Pilates, depending on their comfort level and mobility.
Chair Pilates
Chair Pilates is ideal for those who may find it difficult to get up and down from the floor. Using a variety of equipment, participants can work different parts of the body while seated.
Despite being low-impact, the sessions are still highly effective. Residents often finish feeling like they’ve had a full workout, with particular benefits for posture and knee strength.
Mat Pilates
For those looking for more of a challenge, mat Pilates focuses on floor-based exercises. These sessions build core strength, flexibility, and overall body control.
By offering both options, every resident can take part, regardless of their fitness level.
Building strength, confidence, and community
Beyond the physical benefits, Nikki’s classes play an important role in building a sense of community.
“There’s always a bit of laughter,” she says. “Everyone is very supportive and encouraging.”
Participants are also invited to join a WhatsApp group, where Nikki shares tips and weekly motivation. Initiatives like “Motivation Monday” focus on different aspects of wellbeing - for example, foot health.
“Your feet are the foundation of your whole body,” Nikki explains. “Poor foot posture can impact your knees, hips, and even your shoulders.”
These small but meaningful insights help residents understand their bodies better and make informed choices about their health.
The long-term benefits of Pilates in later life
For older adults, Pilates offers a wide range of long-term benefits:
- Improved balance and stability, reducing the risk of falls
- Greater joint strength, supporting everyday movement
- Enhanced flexibility, making daily tasks easier
- Reduced discomfort in areas such as the back, hips, and shoulders
- Increased energy levels and overall positivity
Perhaps most importantly, it helps residents maintain their independence - something that’s invaluable at any stage of life.
Embracing Active April and beyond
Active April is the perfect reminder that it’s never too late to prioritise your health. At Burnham Waters, residents are supported every step of the way, with opportunities to stay active, social, and engaged.
Whether it’s joining Nikki’s Pilates classes, taking a stroll through the scenic surroundings, or simply moving more throughout the day, every small step contributes to a healthier, happier retirement.
Because staying active isn’t just about adding years to life - it’s about adding life to years!
