Popular new hobbies and activities for over 55’s

Looking to explore more activities for over 55’s in 2024? The new year is the perfect opportunity to try new things and indulge in new hobbies to begin a new chapter! Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone from time to time is fundamental to keeping mentally, physically and socially stimulated.

If you’d like to try new hobbies and activities, but aren’t sure where to start, the good news is that there are countless opportunities to be discovered! Here, the Burnham Waters team take a look at some of the most interesting activities you can try this year.

Travelling and Exploration

Retirement and travelling go hand in hand! It’s not often the first hobby to come to mind when we think of the wind down, but really, it’s the perfect time to go, especially if you’ve just recently retired.

If you have a bucket list of places you’d like to go, but just haven’t had the chance to visit previously, now is your chance. Whether you’re out on a solo exploration trip or wish to travel to a few hot destinations with a loved one, luxury communities allow you to come and go as you please with complete peace of mind. Make a list of all the places you’d love to go and start planning! If you’d like to stay closer to home, the UK is filled with beautiful places to discover, and you can explore by train or car very easily.

Gardening

Next on our list of new hobbies and activities for over 55’s this new year is gardening. It’s a very rewarding pastime that also encourages sustainable living if you grow your own produce. There’s nothing more satisfying that a winter’s soup made with homegrown vegetables and prepared by yourself! If you’re looking to eat a little better come the new year, ‘growing your own’ through gardening can also support this.

Gardening has been proven to be therapeutic and can also benefit your mental health. Caring for something and nurturing it to fruition is extremely rewarding and encourages daily routine. Don’t worry, you don’t need to have lots of experience to get started. Simply take a look at a couple of books, turn to Youtube for tutorials and of course, garden centres will be more than happy to help should you need advice.

At Burnham Waters, our allotments enable residents to grow flowers, plants and other produce all year round. What a great excuse to start this new hobby in 2024!

Cooking and Baking

Perhaps you want to brush up on your cooking or baking skills? Cooking instils a wonderful sense of achievement, but it’s also a simple way to bring friends and family together.

There are plenty of options to choose from if you’re looking to enhance this skillset, it just depends what kind of learner you are! There are countless cooking books to choose from, or why not tune in to a cooking channel or regular cooking slot on morning TV? Start cooking or baking the simple recipes that take your fancy. Practice makes perfect, so our advice would be to throw yourself into the frying pan and experiment! So long as you’ve got a set of instructions to follow, nothing too drastic can go wrong. Have faith!

Cooking and baking can help to ease stress and boost creative stimulation. Start by making a simple meal plan to follow and as you get more confident, you can branch out. Why not start hosting a regular Sunday roast for your family or friends to enjoy over winter?

Crafting

Arts and crafts are one of the most popular activities for over 55’s. There are so many different categories within this, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Explore your creative side with painting, drawing, calligraphy, sculpting, decoupage, knitting, macrame, wreath making and more! Crafting enables you to express yourself, have fun and meet like-minded people.

There are a few art classes within the local community, notably, the Burnham Art Club. Have a look online for more options! There are plenty of online tutorials to discover, and many of them are free. Creating art is a therapeutic outlet and a great way to embellish your home with a new lease of life this new year.

Joining A Club

Joining a club of any sort is a great way to ensure you learn a new hobby and get involved with new activities this year. Challenge yourself and join a new club this January! Lifestyle retirement villages present the perfect opportunity for 55 and overs to enjoy a fun and social lifestyle and make all important new connections.

Our retirement village in Essex ensures that there is something available for everyone, with plenty of facilities to access just outside your front door! A weekly agenda will be available shortly, but at Burnham Waters, we aim to have activities such as a book club, swim club, walking club, arts and crafts and plenty more activities for over 55’s on offer! Of course, if you fancy a catch up and a cuppa with a few neighbours, the comfort of our cosy café is just around the corner.

Feedback

The team have been so patient and understanding with my elderly parents. Although we haven’t been through a purchase yet we are hoping that will come. Nathan and his team have been accommodating, kind and very knowledgable throughout our dealings with them so far. Highly recommend.

Christina Sheilds

Having been met by Nathan we followed him onto the estate and was introduced to Jamie. His truly inspirational concept for a community development have left us wanting to be part of it. Loved the bungalow and once inside we able to see for ourselves the high spec and generous size rooms. Every aspect appears to have been thought about carefully and we are looking forward to seeing the 3 bedroom show home.

Mrs Moss

The property exceeded expectations. My wife and I appreciate how generous you were with your time with us. It’s a great, well thought out and designed development for the over 55’s.

Mr & Mrs Francis

Completely blown away with the spaciousness of the layout of the estate and the beautifully presented bungalow. I can’t thank you enough for the all the advice and information the team at the bungalow gave coupled with the help and genuine understanding and help with our particular issues.
