As retirement lifestyle village experts, in this week’s edition, we discuss the home features that have been deemed essential by those aged 55 and over! If you’re in need of inspiration, you’re in the right place, let’s take a closer look.
Wet room shower
A wet room offers ultimate convenience and accessibility to shower facilities. They mean more space, less hassle and you don’t have to worry about cleaning or mopping any excess water after you’re finished. Aesthetically, they look great and the non-slip shower floor minimises unwanted trips or falls, which can often be a concern as we get older. At Burnham Waters, all of our bathrooms are fully fitted wet rooms for the ease and comfort of our residents!
Home security
For many over 60s, they might feel safer with a security camera around their house and might even deem it an essential feature with the home. Home security is often an afterthought, especially if you’re not used to having it. However, it is an important investment to ensure a higher level of safety and security. Ring doorbells and home cameras are quick and easy to install and promote complete peace of mind.
At Burnham Waters, resident security and safety is always a priority. Our properties come with fitted alert systems and video doorbells to maintain security. In order to enhance that safe, community feel, an estate office and on-site security is on-site 24/7. You’ll have the freedom to lock up and leave, knowing that your property is safe.
Smart technology
For 55 and overs, technology is now a fundamental feature within the home. From Amazon Alexa, to iPads and Netflix, these devices and programmes are essential to stay connected with family, friends and the latest entertainment. To ensure smart devices and technology work, a good internet connection is another consideration. These combined facilities significantly reduce possible loneliness and isolation and ensure there is something to keep you busy whenever you need. Whether it’s a FaceTime with loved ones, a little music whilst cooking dinner, or catching up on your favourite shows at the weekend, technology is a necessity for us all.
Burnham Waters has been designed with the everchanging technological world in mind. Residents can look forward to standard technology features within their homes to use as and when most convenient. This includes:
- Security Alarms
- Smart Lock and Video Intercom
- Fast Fibre Internet Connectivity
- CCTV Cameras - located on the driveway and patio area of each property. Additional CCTV on the perimeter walking paths and communal spaces enhances our onsite security. Our cameras include AI that detect if a person has fallen over on a measured walking trail and ensures assistance is provided.
- Nobi Smart Lamps within properties (optional) – Like the above, Nobi can monitor movement and let care providers know if a resident has fallen for immediate assistance.

Open plan spaces
Open plan homes really help to create space in the living area. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it’s also extremely practical for the 55 and overs. We never know exactly what the future holds, so ensuring that your home is spacious now will save your time and effort further down the line.
If you’re looking for optimum space, bungalows cater for every eventuality, you don’t have stairs and homes are wheelchair friendly. At Burnham Waters, our new build retirement bungalows are built to M4(3) building regulations, making them (and their surrounding areas) fully mobility scooter, walking frame and wheelchair adaptable.
Plants and greenery
It’s widely known that plants help to improve the air quality around us, not to mention the positive impact gardening and greenery can have on our mental health. Plants have been deemed a must have feature by the 55 and overs, which really is no surprise given their vast list of benefits for the home and lifestyle.
Planting is easy to enjoy within the home, with the living room and kitchen being top spots to ensure your plants thrive. Kentia palm trees, cheese plants, peace lilies, orchids and begonias are beautiful plants and flowers that are easy to care for. Whether you’re an avid gardener or looking to get to grips with your newly found green fingers, windowsill herb gardens are the latest trend to try! All you need is a sunny spot, a container with drainage holes and a saucer to go underneath, potting mix, your chosen herbs and water! Our favourite herbs to try are:
- Basil
- Chives
- Rosemary
- Parsley
- Thyme
At Burnham Waters, we know there’s nothing like making your house a home, so encourage our residents to fill their homes with the plants and flora that make them happy! We also have large allotments that residents can use whenever they wish. So, if you want to try growing something a little bigger in a calm, countryside setting we’d love to see you!
