5 new year resolutions for retirees
Happy New Year! With the next year seemingly upon us, it’s time to start thinking about those all-important new year’s resolutions! We encourage all retirees to set goals that are achievable but also challenge you to branch out of your comfort zone, encouraging a fulfilling lifestyle!
Have you found yourself needing a little inspiration? Here are some of our favourite resolutions that could help you enhance your day-to-day this year!
1. Eat well
Prioritising your health is always extremely important - especially as a retiree. One of the easiest ways to do that is by eating well. A great way to ensure that you are getting your required nutrients is by eating your five fruit and vegetables a day, combined with plenty of fibre. Home cooked food that uses delicious, wholesome ingredients is always better for our digestive systems. Whole grains over refined, lean meats over fatty options and using natural herbs and spices can help to add flavour, reducing the need for an increased salt and fat intake. We all have different requirements, but as we get older, generally, we can afford to consume less calories, so long as the food we are eating is full of essential nutrients.
Alongside a balanced diet, drinking enough water is extremely important. The recommendation for adults is to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day to help maintain overall health and vital organ function.
Additionally, supplements such as multi-vitamins, can help to boost the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are fundamental to our wellbeing. Those recommended for retirees include calcium, vitamin C, folic acid and vitamin B12. Of course, it’s always best to consult your doctor before trying any new supplements.
2. 10 minutes of exercise
If you’re a retiree, keeping active is not only the key to healthy aging, but studies have shown it promotes a longer life. Incorporating just 10 minutes of daily exercise can have a profound impact on your overall quality of life. It doesn’t have to be anything too strenuous either! Simply dedicate a few minutes out of your day to try activities like walking, swimming or even yoga. A little exercise can drastically improve your blood pressure, resting heart rate, sleeping pattern, brain function and muscle mass to name a few.
Aside from the physical advantages, exercise benefits your mental health significantly. At Burnham Waters, our on-site amenities offer a wide range of activities that you can get involved with at your discretion. We promote and active and social environment for our residents to thrive within! To view a full list of our facilities, head over to our lifestyle page.
3. Daily mental stimulation
It’s important that we challenge the brain as we get older. Once we retire, we become used to using our brains in a different kind of way, so it’s important that we exercise all elements of the mind. Keeping your brain stimulated helps with problem solving, retaining information and aids in preventing the risk of memory loss further down the line.
If you’re looking to keep your brain in shape, make sure that puzzles and brain training is on your resolution list this year! Simple things such as reading, doing crosswords, a wordsearch or sudoku can be fun and ensures your body’s most important muscle receives an adequate workout!
4. Join a club
Lifestyle retirement villages present the perfect opportunity for retirees to enjoy a fun and social lifestyle. They also enable you to make all important new connections at any age! If you’re apprehensive about making new friends, why not join a club? Challenging yourself to get out and about is a steadfast way to ensure you make the most of each day this new year.
Our retirement village in Essex will ensure that there is something available for everyone, with plenty of facilities to access just outside your front door! A weekly agenda will be available in due course, but at Burnham Waters, we aim to have activities such as a book club, swim club, walking club, arts and crafts and plenty more on offer! Of course, if you fancy a catch up and a cuppa with a few neighbours, the comfort of our cosy café will be just around the corner!
5. More family time
For many retirees, loneliness and isolation can be a cause for concern. Consequently, it’s important that we establish new connections, while strengthening existing ones!
Whether it’s helping your grandchildren with a school project, going for a walk with your children, taking your sister out for lunch, or doing the weekly food shop with friends, in person connection is fundamental to a fulfilled retirement. Having a routine can really aid a feeling of purpose during this new chapter. Why not set yourself the project of making a schedule outlining your set visiting days?
As important as in person meet ups are, sometimes, they’re just not doable from time to time. So, if you’re not as tech-savvy as you’d like to be, why not invest in a new phone, tablet or laptop? Learning how to use a mobile device for phone calls, texts, video calls and even emails will allow even more opportunity for checking in with loved ones.
Here at Burnham Waters, we encourage you to invite your family and friends round whenever is most convenient for you! Our residents are the heart and soul of our community, so we always encourage social meet ups to instil that close-knit feel within the village.
